San Rafael

Welcome to San Rafael

A culture you can see, taste, smell, and feel.

San Rafael is the Bay Area and northern California’s largest, oldest, and most culturally diverse community. Rustic, old-fashioned, Mexican, and European eateries are plentiful, along with local farmers’ markets, parks, beaches, and other outdoor recreational areas. The historic downtown district is rich in missionary culture, while residential enclaves boast architectural significance. The region’s several state and national parks and preserves have ensured San Rafael is in no shortage of natural beauty.
First founded by Spanish missionaries, San Rafael was fully incorporated as a city in 1874. What was first the site of several native Miwok tribes is now the home of a then-popular railroad site. In modern times, the railroad is gone but residents enjoy an urban/suburban location, with an abundance of locally owned businesses, shops, restaurants, and coffee houses just down the street from their homes. With downtown San Francisco less than 20 miles away, it is one of northern California's most popular places to call home.

What to Love

Local Lifestyle

As one of California's most vibrant and culturally diverse communities, San Rafael is plentiful with top rated-restaurants, beautiful outdoor scenery, and vast, protected green spaces. Five-star European eateries stand side-by-side among scenic parks, golf courses, and countryside markets. Several non-profit charities provide housing and other funding to some of downtown's beautiful and interesting art exhibitions. The culinary industry, one of the most vibrant in the nation, consistently showcases some of the best Italian, French, and Hispanic cuisine prepared by chefs who have grown up and perfected their craft right in California.

Dining, Entertainment, and Shopping

Northern California is fortunate enough to host some of the nation’s most talented chefs, several of which are natives of the region. San Rafael specifically is home to many of these establishments
Le Comptoir, a trendy French eatery and market serving perfected steaks and mussels paired with a lengthy wine menu has been tantalizing San Rafael residents since 2016. Similarly romantic Italian cuisine is served nearby at Il Davide. For over two decades, locals have enjoyed refined Tuscan cuisine at this perfect date night spot.
Pond Farm Brewing Co. is a newer addition to San Rafael’s west end, featuring an open, casual taproom with group seating and a large selection of seasonal brews. A rotation of local food truck “pop-ups” gracing the grounds makes it the perfect place to stay and rejoice for the end of a long work week.
More special occasions can be celebrated at Revel & Roost. The chef has crafted a seasonal menu featuring the freshest ingredients available in this neighborhood hot spot. Brick oven pizza, comforting chicken dishes, and paella are served in healthy portions at this multi-award-winning Bay Area favorite.
